Procedure
Cyclopropylmagnesium bromide (32 mL, 16.00 mmol) was added dropwise to a solution of (R)-tert-butyl 1-oxopropan-2-ylcarbamate (1.10 g, 6.35 mmol) in anhydrous THF (Volume: 25.4 mL) at −78° C. The reaction mixture was then allowed to warm to 0° C. and stirred at this temp for 4 hrs before quenching with sat. ammonium chloride solution. The evaporated organic was then purified by column chromatography using hexane:ethyl acetate as eluent to give tert-butyl (2R)-1-cyclopropyl-1-hydroxypropan-2-ylcarbamate (745 mg, 3.46 mmol, 54.5% yield). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CCl3D) δ 4.80 (br. s., 1H), 3.94-3.66 (m, 1H), 3.07-2.90 (m, 1H), 2.87-2.65 (m, 1H), 2.44-2.13 (m, 1H), 1.48-1.37 (m, 9H), 1.24-1.12 (m, 3H), 1.06-0.91 (m, 1H), 0.91-0.78 (m, 1H), 0.64-0.46 (m, 2H), 0.42-0.15 (m, 2H).
