In a 10 ml microwave vial was 7-phenyl-1H-pyrido[2,3-b][1,4]oxazin-2(3H)-one (50 mg, 0.221 mmol) and N-bromosuccinimide (78.6 mg, 0.441 mmol) in dimethylformamide (1 ml). The reaction mixture was heated to 80° C. under microwave irradiation for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature and diluted with ethyl acetate (10 ml). The organic solution was washed with water (2×10 ml) and brine (2×10 ml). The organic phase was dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude residue was purified via Biotage chromatography (gradient 0% to 5% methanol in dichloromethane) to give the title compound as a yellow solid (61 mg, 90%). 1H NMR (500 MHz, CD3OD) δ 7.48-7.32 (5H, m), 7.12 (1H, s), 4.82 (2H, s).
