Procedure

To a 0° C. solution of 3-chloro-4-fluorophenol (2.10 g, 14.3 mmol) in toluene (14.3 ml) was added (S)-(+)-sec-butanol (1.39 ml, 15.0 mmol), triphenylphosphine (3.76 g, 14.3 mmol), and DIAD (3.06 ml, 15.76 mmol). The reaction warmed to rt overnight. The reaction mixture was filtered through a fritted funnel and washed with toluene. The filtrate was concentrated. The residue was diluted with EtOAc and washed with 1N NaOH. The aqueous phase was extracted with EtOAc (2 times). The combined organics were dried with MgSO4, filtered, and concentrated. The residue was purified on a silica gel cartridge (0% EtOAc/hexanes to 4% EtOAc/hexanes) to give the desired product.
