Procedure
4-(Benzyloxy)benzoic acid (4.73 g, 20.72 mmol) was suspended in CH2Cl2 (50 mL). The suspension was cooled to 0° C. To this suspension was added oxalyl chloride (3.63 mL, 41.4 mmol) followed by N,N-dimethylformamide (0.24 mL, 3.11 mmol) dropwise. The reaction was stirred for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure, diluted with toluene, and concentrated under reduced pressure. The isolated solid was used directly for the next reaction without further purification.
