Procedure
A suspension of methyl(4-chloro-3-trifluoromethoxyphenyl)acetate (4.8 g, 17.8 mmol) in N,N-dimethylacetamide (50 mL) in a 250 mL round bottomed flask was degassed by bubbling nitrogen for 15 minutes. To this suspension was then added zinc dust (0.23 g, 3.55 mmol), DPPF (0.79 g, 1.42 mmol), Pd2(dba)3 (0.65 g, 0.71 mmol), and Zn(CN)2 (2.50 g, 21.3 mmol) at room temperature. The nitrogen purge was continued for another 15 minutes before the mixture was heated in a 120° C. oil bath for 12 hours. LC-MS indicated that the starting material was consumed to give the product. LC-MS (IE, m/z): 260 [M+1]+. The mixture was partitioned twice between water and ethyl acetate. The organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified on a silica gel column (5-20% ethyl acetate/hexanes) to yield the title product as a yellowish solid. 1H-NMR (500 MHz, CDCl3) δ ppm 3.77 (s, 2H), 3.78 (s, 3H), 7.39 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 1H), 7.40 (s, 1H), 7.72 (d, J=7.5 Hz, 1H).
