A mixture of cyclobutanone (0.3 mL, 3.94 mmol) in acetic acid (0.19 mL, 3.28 mmol) was added to a stirred solution of piperidin-4-yl acetic acid ethyl ester (562 mg, 3.28 mmol, obtained in above step) in dichloromethane cooled at 0° C. Solid sodium triacetoxyborohydride (1.39 grams, 7.2 mmol) was added portion wise over a period of 15 minutes. The reaction mixture was gradually warmed to room temperature and stirred for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. and basified with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution (pH: 7.5). The two layers were separated, the organic layer was washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulphate and the volatiles were removed under reduced pressure to obtain (1-Cyclobutyl piperidin-4-yl) acetic acid ethyl ester (652 mg).
