N-Phenyl-N-(2-naphthyl)hydrazine (2.3 g) (or hydrochloride (2.7 g)) was dissolved in 50 ml of ethanol and 10 g of 3-methyl-butanone-2 was added. To this mixture 10 ml 70% perchloric acid was added slowly with stirring at room temperature. Stirring was continued for one hour at 80-90° C. and after cooling down, the resultant precipitate was filtered off and washed with ethanol to provide 0.6 g (16%) 1,1,2-trimethyl-3-phenyl-1H-benzo[e]indolium perchlorate as a yellow solid, which was sufficiently pure for the next synthetic step. 1H NMR (400 MHz, TFA) δ 8.05 (d, 1H, J=8.5), 7.86 (t, 2H, J=7.6), 7.62 (dd, 4H, J=6.8, 13.4), 7.52 (t, 1H, J=7.6), 7.37 (d, 2H, J=7.3), 7.00 (d, 1H, J=8.9), 2.58 (s, 3H), 1.81 (s, 6H).
