Procedure

To a solution of methyl 2-bromo-1H-indole-3-carboxylate (1.0 g, 4.0 mmol) in dimethylformamide was added sodium hydride (0.32 g, 8.0 mmol, 60% in oil) under ice bath. The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 0.5 hour. Then (1-bromoethyl)benzene (1.1 g, 6.0 mmol) was added in portion slowly. Then the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hour. After the reaction, it was diluted with water (100 mL), and the product was extracted with ethyl acetate (100 mL), dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, concentrated and purified by column Chromatography (silica gel: ethyl acetate:petroleum ether=1:8) to give the pure product methyl 2-bromo-1-(1-phenylethyl)-1H-indole-3-carboxylate (1.1 g, 75%) as a yellow oil.
