To a stirred solution of methyl 5-bromo-2-methyl-3-((tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-yl)amino)benzoate (2.5 g, 5.83 mmol) and acetaldehyde (513 mg, 11.66 mmol) in dichloroethane (50 mL), acetic acid (2.0 ml, 34.9 mmol) was added and reaction was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes. The reaction mixture was cooled to 0° C. and sodium triacetoxyborohydride (3.7 g, 17.49 mmol) was added and stirred at room temperature for overnight. The mixture was neutralized with sat. NaHCO3 and compound was extracted in DCM, dried over Na2SO4, concentrated under reduced pressure. The crude material was purified by column chromatography to afford methyl 5-bromo-3-(ethyl(tetrahydro-2H-thiopyran-4-yl)amino)-2-methylbenzoate (2.0 g, 74.0%).
