Procedure
Magnesium metal turnings (44.35 mmol, 1.08 g) were flame dried, then stirred under argon in 40 ml of anhydrous ether. With vigorous stirring, 1-bromo-4-fluorobenzene (40.3 mmol) was added dropwise to the magnesium. The reaction was initiated in an ultrasound device and then the halide was added dropwise at a rate sufficient to maintain reflux. After addition of the bromide was complete, the reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 20 minutes, then heated to reflux and finally cooled to room temperature. This procedure yielded a golden orange transparent Grignard solution containing 40.32 mmol of title Grignard as a 0.91M solution in ether.
