Procedure

1.88 g of 2,3,4,5,11,11a-hexahydro-1H-1,4-diazepino-[1,2-a]indole in 20 ml of DMF are stirred for one hour at 20° with 1.48 g of K tert.-butylate, 1.1 g of ethyl bromide are added and the solution is stirred for a further 10 hours. 200 ml of water are then added and the mixture is extracted several times with ethyl acetate. After drying and evaporating the organic phase, 2-ethyl-2,3,4,5,11,11a-hexahydro-1H-1,4-diazepino[1,2-a]indole is obtained. Hydrochloride, m.p. 204°.
