A mixture of dry powdered potassium cyanide (4g.) and 4-nitrobenzophenone (2.27g) was suspended in dimethylsulphoxide (40 ml.) and heated for 4 hours at 100°C. with occasional agitation. The solution was then poured into water and the insoluble neutral fraction removed by filtration. After acidification the filtrate was extracted with ether and the 5-benzoylsalicylonitrile thus obtained was crystallised from aqueous ethanol to give needles, m.p. 185°-186°C.
