A suspension of 20 g of 2-(1-methylethyl)-11-oxo-11H-pyrido[2,1-b]quinazoline-8-carboxylic acid, 6.3 ml of chloroacetonitrile and 13.2 g of potassium carbonate in 100 ml of dimethylformamide was stirred 18 hours at room temperature. The reaction mixture was diluted with 200 ml of water and the precipitated product collected to give 21.63 g (95%) of 2-(1-methylethyl)-11-oxo-11H-pyrido[2,1-b]quinazoline-8-carboxylic acid cyanomethyl ester, mp 186°-188° C.
