To a mixture of ethyl 6-chloro-1,2-dihydro-2-oxo-4-phenyl-3-quinolinecarboxylate (2.62 g) and DMF (24 ml) was added portionwise 60% sodium hydride in oil (0.35 g), followed by stirring for 30 minutes at room temperature. The mixture was ice-cooled, to which methyl iodide (0.6 g) was dropwise added under stirring. The mixture was stirred for 3 hours at room temperature, diluted with and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with water, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to remove the solvent. The residue was crystallized from isopropyl ether to give crystals of ethyl 6-chloro-1,2-dihydro -1-methyl-2-oxo-4-phenyl-3-quinolinecarboxylate (2.35 g, 92.7%). Recrystallization from ethanol gave colorless needles. mp 124°-125° C.
