Procedure

A mixture of (E)-3-[1-(2-methoxycarbonylethyl)-2-methyl-3-(3-pyridylmethyl)-1H-indol-5-yl]-2-propenoic acid (2.02 g), 10% palladium on carbon (0.20 g) and ammonium formate (1.68 g) in methanol (20 ml) and tetrahydrofuran (20 ml) was heated at 60° C. for 4 hours and then cooled and filtered. The residue was washed with methanol, and the filtrate and washings were combined and evaporated. The residue was triturated with dilute acetic acid to give a gummy solid. The solid was filtered off and boiled with ether to give the title compound as a crystalline solid (1.79 g), m.p. 144°-146° C. Found: C,69.60; H,6.20; N,7.16. C22 H24N2O4 requires: C,69.45; H,6.36; N,7.37%.
