Procedure
2.7 gm of 2-amino-3-bromo-5-carbomethoxy-N-ethyl-benzylamine were boiled for 35 minutes with 65 ml of 6 N hydrochloric acid. Thereafter, upon cooling the reaction solution to -15°C, N-ethyl-2-amino-3-bromo-5-carboxy-benzylamine hydrochloride crystallized out and was recrystallized from ethanol/ether, whereupon it had a melting point of 261°C (decomp.).
