To a solution of methyl 4-(hydroxymethyl)-1-naphthalenecarboxylate (1.0 g, 4.62 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 ml) was added methyl iodide (1 ml), and sodium hydride (222 mg, 5.55 mmol, 60% in oil) was further added at 0° C., and the mixture was stirred at room temperature for 10 min. To the reaction solution was added water (30 ml) and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (50 ml×2). The extract was washed with saturated brine, dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate=20:1-10:1) to give methyl 4-((methyloxy)methyl)-1-naphthalenecarboxylate (898 mg, 84%).
