Procedure
A solution of (E)-methyl 2-(2-(bromomethyl)phenyl)-3-methoxyacrylate (3.0 g, 10.52 mmol), 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1.41 g, 1.1 eq) and potassium carbonate (3.0 g, 3.0 eq) in a mixture of acetonitrile (CH3CN, 30 mL)/H2O (5 mL) was refluxed for 15 hours. After concentration in a vacuum to remove the reaction solvent, the residue was stirred in water (50 mL) and the aqueous layer was extracted twice with 50 mL of dichloromethane. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in a vacuum to remove the solvent. Purification by silica gel chromatography afforded (E)-methyl 2-(2((3-formylphenoxy)methyl)phenyl)-3-methoxyacrylate as a white solid (3.0 g, yield 87%).
