Procedure
(E)-methyl 2-(2-(bromomethyl)phenyl)-3-methoxyacrylate (3.0 g, 10.52 mmol), 3-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1.41 g, 1.1 eq) and potassium carbonate (3.0 g, 3.0 eq) were together refluxed for 15 hours in acetonitrile (CH3CN, 30 mL)/H2O (5 mL). Concentration at a reduced pressure removed the reaction solvent. The residue was stirred in water (50 mL) and the aqueous layer was extracted twice with 50 mL of dichloromethane. The organic layer was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in a vacuum to remove the solvent. The concentrate was purified by silica gel chromatography to give (E)-methyl 2-(2((3-formylphenoxy)methyl)phenyl)-3-methoxyacrylate as a white solid (3.0 g, yield 87%).
