Procedure
A solution of ethyl 3-(pyrrolidin-2-yl)propanoate (3 g, 17.5 mmol), methyl 2-bromoacetate (3 g, 18 mmol) and K2CO3 (3 g, 21.7 mmol) in CH3CN was stirred at 80° C. overnight. The completion of the reaction was monitored by TLC. After the suspension was diluted with water (50 mL) and extracted with ethyl acetate (3×50 mL), the combined organic layers were concentrated to give the crude product, which was directly used for the next step without further purification. MS (ESI): 244 (MH+).
