Procedure

A suspension of tert-butyl 2-(4-phenyl-1H-imidazol-2-yl)ethylcarbamate (1.071 g, 3.73 mmol) and potassium carbonate (1.13 g, 8.2 mmol) in DMF (10 mL) was stirred at 20° C. for 30 min. Then the reaction mixture was cooled to 0-5° C. and iodomethane (280 μl, 4.47 mmol) was added and the resulting mixture was stirred for 30 min. After removal of the ice bath the reaction mixture was stirred at 20° C. for 6 h, poured into water (10 mL) and extracted with dichloromethane (2×20 mL). The organic layers were combined, dried over MgSO4 and concentrated in vacuo. The crude material was purified by flash chromatography (using silica gel amine phase and an ethyl acetate/heptane gradient) to give the product as light yellow solid (835 mg, 2.77 mmol, 74.3%).
