Procedure
(R)—N-trifluoroacetyl-2-amino phenyl propanol (11.8 g, 0.0477 mol) prepared as above was dissolved in 100 ml of isopropanol. At a controlled temperature of <10 with ice bath, 70 ml of concentrated hydrochloric acid was added dropwise. The temperature was slowly raised to 40, and a reaction was allowed to proceed for 15 hours. The solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure (water bath temperature <60), and benzene (100 ml×2) was added to remove water by azeotropism. Ethanol (120 ml×2) was then added for the azeotropism. A white solid was obtained by evaporation till dry. The solid was recrystallized with ethanol, and dried, to produce 6.7 g of (R)-2-amino phenyl propanol hydrochloride. The yield was 74.9%.
