Procedure

1-(4,4-diethoxybutyl)-2-propyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinoline (25.3 g, 71.2 mmol) was added to a solution of concentrated hydrochloric acid (35 mL) and water (35 mL) cooled to 0° C. and the reaction mixture was allowed to warm to ambient temperature and was stirred for 30 minutes. The reaction mixture was diluted with water (100 mL) and dichloromethane (200 mL) and the pH of the reaction mixture was slowly made basic with addition of potassium carbonate. The aqueous and organic layers were separated and the organic layer was dried over potassium carbonate, filtered, and concentrated to afford 22.7 g of 4-(2-propyl-1H-imidazo[4,5-c]quinolin-1-yl)butyraldehyde.
