Procedure
(+/−)-4-(4-Chlorophenyl)-2,2-dimethyl-cyclopentanone (0.250 g, 1.12 mmol) is dissolved in isopropanol (5 mL) and stirred. tert-Butoxybis(dimethylamino)methane (0.33 mL, 1.57 mmol) is added drop wise to the reaction. The reaction is heated in a sealed vial at 100° C. for 12 hours, cooled to room temperature, and concentrated to dryness. The residue is diluted with isopropanol (5 mL). Hydrazine hydrate (0.11 mL, 2.25 mmol) is added to the reaction and heated to 100° C. in a sealed vial for 5 hours. The reaction is concentrated in vacuo. The residue is purified by silica gel flash chromatography eluting with 20% ethyl acetate in hexanes to obtain the title compound (0.035 g, 13%) as a yellow film. ES/MS (m/z) 247.0 (M+1).
