Procedure
Carbazole (0.90 g, 5.42 mmol), 3,4′-diiodobiphenyl, K2CO3 (2.72 g, 19.7 mmol), copper powder (0.43 g, 6.77 mmol), and 18-crown-6 (0.13 g, 0.49 mmol) were dissolved in o-dichlorobenzene and heated to reflux for 48 h. The solution was filtered and the solvent removed in vacuo, the residue was recrystallized from MeOH to afford the product (0.83 g, 69.7%). 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ 8.22-8.16 (m, 4H), 7.93-7.65 (m, 8H), 7.56-7.49 (m, 8H), 7.47-7.28 (m, 4H). 13C NMR (CDCl3+DMSO-d6) δ 142.1, 140.8, 140.7, 139.0, 138.3, 137.3, 130.5, 128.5, 127.3, 126.1, 126.0, 125.9, 125.6, 123.4, 120.3, 120.2, 120.0, 109.7. EI MS m/z 484 [M+], m.p.=244-246° C.
