A mixed solution of the above 1-(3-amino-2-oxopropyl)-5-bromo-2-chlorobenzene.hydrochloride (1.70 g) in ethyl acetate (30 ml)-water (15 ml) was cooled to 0° C. Added thereto were benzoyl chloride (0.99 ml) and sodium hydrogen carbonate (2.39 g), and the mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 3 hours. The organic layer was washed with brine, and dried over sodium sulfate. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure and the residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography (chloroform:ethyl acetate=95:5) to give 1-(3-benzoylamino-2-oxopropyl)-5-bromo-2-chlorobenzene (710 mg) as a colorless solid.
