Procedure

To a solution of 2-methoxy-4-[1-(3-methylphenyl)-3-methyl-1H-pyrazol-5-yl]pyridine (Example 22; 0.56 g, 0.002 mol) in 5 mL of acetic acid was added 5 mL of hydrobromic acid. The reaction mixture was heated at reflux for 3 hours and then cooled to room temperature. Water was added and the solution was basified with ammonium hydroxide. The aqueous phase was extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic layer was washed with brine, dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give 0.45 g (85%) of product as a white solid: mp: 182-183° C.; Anal. Calc'd. for C16H15N3O: C, 72.43; H, 5.70; N, 15.84. Found: C, 72.37; H, 5.66; N, 15.97.
