Procedure

The compound prepared in Example 6 was dissolved in THF (1 ml) and Et2O (1 ml). 10% Na2CO3 (2 ml) was added and the reaction was stirred vigorously. After 24 h, the reaction was acidified with 1M HCl and extracted with CHC13 (2×). The combined organic layers were dried over MgSO4, filtered and concentrated to yield 40 mg of a white solid (96%). 1H-NMR (CDCl3) 2.83 (s, 3H), 5.34 (s, 2H), 7.40 (m, 5H); 13C-NMR. (d6-DMSO) 15.7 (CH3), 65.1 (CH2), 105.3 (C), 107.0 (C), 127.7 (CH), 128.0 (CH), 128.6 (CH), 136.6 (C), 148.7 (C), 161.9 (C), 166.7 (C), 167.2 (C);
