Procedure
Under a nitrogen atmosphere, oxalyl chloride (3.8 g, 30 mmol) was combined with methylene chloride (30 mL). The resulting mixture was cooled to 0° C. and dimethylformamide (10 drops) was added. After 5 minutes of stirring a solution of 2-fluoro-α-methyl-biphenylacetic acid (3.0 g, 12 mmol) in methylene chloride (30 mL) was added dropwise over a 30 minute period. The reaction mixture was allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred overnight. The solvent was evaporated to give the product in a quantitative yield as a yellow solid. 1H NMR (CDCl3) δ: 1.58 (d, 3 H), 4.20 (q, 1 H), 7.11 (t, 2 H), 7.33-7.47 (m, 4 H), 7.54 (d, 2 H).
