To a solution of 1-butyl-4-dimethoxymethyl-2-phenyl-1H-imidazole 209 (2.74 g, 10 mmol) in anhydrous TH-F under nitrogen at −78° C., n-BuLi (1.6 M in hexane, 7.5 ml, 12 mmol) is added dropwise and the mixture is continued stirring at this temperature for 30 ran. After anhydrous DMF (4 mL) is added, the mixture is stirred at room temperature for 16 h. Saturated ammonium chloride and ethyl acetate were added at 0° C. and the organic phase is separated. The aqueous phase is extracted with ethyl acetate and the combined organic phase is washed with brine, dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue is purified by column chromatography to yield the desired product as a white solid. Yield: 1.94 g; LC-MS (MH+): 303. 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 10.18 (s, 1H), 7.60-7.56 (m, 2H), 7.51-7.46 (m, 3H), 5.63 (s, 1H), 4.32 (t, J=6.3 Hz, 2H), 3.47 (s, 6H), 1.73-1.63 (m, 2H), 1.28-1.16 (m, 2H), 0.82 (t, J=7.2 Hz, 3H).
