Methyl(3S,4R)-4-{[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]amino}-1-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperidine-3-carboxylate (Intermediate 37) (650 mg, 1.93 mmol) was reacted with methanesulfonyl chloride (0.18 mL, 2.32 mmol) in the presence of triethylamine (0.38 mL, 2.7 mmol) as described for Intermediate 6. The crude chloride was used without delay for the next step.
