Trifluoroacetic acid was added (2 mL) to 3-(4-imidazol-1-ylmethylphenyl)-5-iso-butyl-N-tert-butylthiophene-2-sulfonamide (113 mg, 0.2618 mmol, see step (e) above) and one drop (ca. 0.05 mL) of anisole (ca. 0.05 mL) was added to the mixture. The reaction mixture was stirred under N2 atmosphere for 30 h and then evaporated and co-evaporated with acetonitrile until TLC showed that it was pure. The crude product was used directly in the next step without further purification.
