Dissolve N-butyl-4-methyl-benzenesulfonamide (10 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (50 mL) and treat with sodium hydride (10 mmol). Stir the reaction for 30 minutes and add ethyl bromoacetate (10 mmol). Stir the reaction at reflux for 18 hours. Then add methylene chloride (100 mL) and rinse with water (100 mL), brine (100 mL), dry over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filter and concentrate to provide crude ethyl-[butyl-(toluene-4-sulfonyl)-amino]-acetate.
