Procedure
Phenol (2714 g, 28.84 moles) is melted in a 5-liter round-bottom flask equipped with mechanical stirrer, temperature controller, and heating mantle. While stirring at 70° C., BF3 etherate (12.38 g, 0.0873 mole) is added. Dicyclopentadiene (381.3 g, 2.88 moles) is added dropwise with the heating mantle removed. The addition rate is controlled so as to maintain the temperature between 70°-85° C., with the total addition taking about one hour. Following the dicyclopentadiene addition, the reaction temperature is raised to 145° C. and maintained for three hours. This reaction mixture is then cooled to ambient temperature.
