A solution of methyl 4-[[hexahydro-4-[(4-phenoxyphenyl)methyl]-1H-1,4-diazepin-1-yl]methyl]benzoate (260 mg, 0.60 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (6 mL) was cautiously added to lithium alanate (45.5 mg, 1.2 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (12 mL) at 0° C. The reaction was stirred overnight at ambient temperature. The mixture was treated with saturated sodium bicarbonate solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with brine, dried over sodium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure. Flash chromatography gave 190 mg of [4-[[hexahydro-4-[(4-phenoxyphenyl)methyl]-1H-1,4-diazepin-1-yl]methyl]phenyl]methanol; 1H NMR (300 MHz, CDCl3) δ 7.33 (m, 4H), 7.33 (dd, 2H), 7.29 (d, 2H), 7.09 (dd, 1H), 7.00 (d, 2H), 6.95 (d, 2H), 4.68 (s, 2H), 3.64 (s, 2H), 3.61 (s, 2H), 2.73 (m, 4H), 2.67 (s, 4H), 1.80 (m, 2H) ppm.
