226 mg (1.2 mmol) of benzalsuccinic acid anhydride were treated in 20 ml of methylene chloride with 0.15 ml of 2-phenethylamine and subsequently stirred at room temperature for 2 hours. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residue was chromatographed on silica gel, to obtain 260 mg (70%) of α-[(phenethylcarbamoyl)methyl]cinnamic acid, MS: 309 (M)+.
