A mixture of 4-chloromethyl-2-formylaminothiazole (1.86 g), 4-mercaptopyridine (1.23 g) and potassium carbonate (1.8 g) in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 ml) was heated at 100° C. for 2 hours with stirring. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure and the residue was triturated with water. The precipitates were collected by filtration, washed with water and dried in vacuo to give 2-formylamino-4-(4-pyridylthiomethyl)thiazole (1.7 g, yield: 68.0%). mp: 182°-184° C. IR (Nujol): 1675, 1650, 1585, 1560, 1270 cm-1
