To a suspension of sodium hydride (60% dispersion in mineral oil) in DMF (3 ml) was added a solution of 1-(2-chloro-5-thiazolylmethyl)-3,3-dimethyl-2-nitroguanidine (0.49 g) in DMF (3 ml) dropwise over 5 minutes at room temperature under stirring. After stirring for five minutes, 2.08M solution of cyanogen bromide in CH3CN (1 ml) was added to the mixture over 5 minutes. After stirring for 1 hour, the reaction mixture was poured into 50 ml of water and the reaction vessel was washed with 10 ml of water. The washing was combined with the aqueous layer and precipitated pellets were obtained by filtration and recrystallized from EtOH to afford 0.334 g of 1-(2-chloro-5-thiazolylmethyl)-1-cyano-3,3-dimethyl-2-nitroguanidine (Compound No. 1) as a crystal, m.p. 152°-155° C.
