Procedure

A stainless steel autoclave equipped with a stirrer was charged with 3 parts of toluene, 15 parts of glacial acetic acid, and 0.42 part of palladium acetate [Pd(OAc)2 ], and the toluene was reacted for 4 hours at 90°C. with the introduction of oxygen at a partial pressure of 60 kg/cm2G. A small amount of benzyl acetate and 0.0687 part of dimethyl diphenyl were obtained, and the precipitation of palladium metal was observed. The dimethyl diphenyl so obtained was in an amount of only 20.2 mol % based on the palladium salt fed. The rate of dimerization was slow, and the palladium salt was precipitated as metal. This shows that the palladium catalyst was not regenerated by oxidation, and did not act catalytically.
