Procedure
Air is blown for five minutes through a mixture of 100 parts of 3-methyl-2-buten-1-ol (prenol) and 100 parts of 3,3-dimethylacrolein. The reaction mixture containing peroxide is then heated for six hours at 140°C. The water formed in the reaction is removed continuously by injecting pentane into the reaction chamber. The rection product is worked up by distillation. 59.2 parts of citral having a boiling point of 103° to 106°C at 12 mm is obtained, equivalent to a yield of 76% of theory based on 3,3-dimethylacrolein at a conversion of 43%.
