Procedure
A mixture of α-bromo-p-tolunitrile (24.5 g; 125 mmol) and sodium sulfite (17.0 g; 135 mmol) in 50 ml of water was heated to reflux and refluxed for 18 hours. The mixture was poured, while still hot, into 100 ml of saturated aqueous NaCl. The resulting heavy white precipitate was thoroughly chilled, collected by suction filtration, and washed with two portions of saturated aqueous NaCl and three portions of Et2O. After drying in vacuo over CaSO4, the sodium p-cyanophenylmethylsulfonate was obtained in essentially quantitative yield.
