Procedure
To a mixture of tert-butyl (1R,2S)-2-({N5-[(benzyloxy)carbonyl]-N2-[(1-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)carbonyl]-L-ornithyl}amino)cyclopentanecarboxylate (3.0 g), methanol (50 ml), and THF (50 ml) were added 1 M hydrochloric acid (5.1 ml) and palladium-carbon (5.4 g) under ice-cooling, followed by stirring at room temperature for 3 hours under a hydrogen atmosphere. The insolubles of the reaction mixture were separated by filtration through Celite and the filtrate was concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain tert-butyl (1R,2S)-2-({N2-[(1-methyl-1H-indol-2-yl)carbonyl]-L-ornithyl}amino)cyclopentanecarboxylate hydrochloride (2.6 g).
