Procedure
LiOH.H2O (85 mg, 2.0 mmol) was added to a solution of N-(4-phenyl-thiazol-2-yl)-malonamic acid ethyl ester (292 mg, 1.0 mmol) in methanol (1.0 mL), THF (1.5 mL) and H2O (1 mL). The resulting mixture was stirred for 1 hour at room temperature then concentrated. The residue was diluted with water, acidified with concentrated HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organics were washed with brine, dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated to afford 230 mg (87%) of N-(4-Phenyl-thiazol-2-yl)-malonamic acid.
