Procedure

A solution of 3-methoxybenzaldehyde (27.0 g) and t-butyl carbazate (25.0 g) in tetrahydrofuran (350 ml) was refluxed for 4 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated to dryness giving t-butyl 3-methoxybenzylidenecarbazate (48.8 g) as an oil, which was used without further purification.
