Procedure

A mixture of 4-fluoro-4′-(trifluoromethoxy)biphenyl-3-carbaldehyde (750 mg, 2.639 mmol), 4-(tert-butyl)phenol (436 mg, 2.903 mmol), potassium carbonate (547 mg, 3.958 mmol) and dimethylacetamide (4 ml) was stirred at 160° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature, diluted with water, and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer was washed with water and saturated brine, and dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate. The residue obtained by evaporation of the solvent under reduced pressure was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (n-hexane:ethyl acetate=15:1) to give the title compound (598 mg, 54.7%) as a pale yellow solid.
