Procedure
32.6 grams (0.118 mol) of 7-chloro-3-cyclohexenyl-1H-indole-6-carboxylic acid was added to a one liter round bottom flask along with 250 mL of a 1:1 (v/v) mixture of THF and methanol. 3.3 grams of 20% palladium hydroxide on carbon was then added and the flask was fitted with a septa and balloon of hydrogen. The mixture was stirred overnight at room temperature. In the morning, the crude product was filtered through a pad of celite and the pad was washed with THF. The product was evaporated to dryness and triturated with cold diethyl ether to give 32.1 grams of a tan solid (98% yield, 85% purity, UV detection λ=220 nm) that was used without further purification. MS m/z 278.00 (M+H).
