N-Methylpiperazine (0.31 mL, 2.7 mmol, 1.0 equiv) was added to the suspension prepared in step a. The resulting mixture was heated to 40° C. and treated with 1 N NaOH to maintain a pH of 9-10. The reaction mixture was stirred for 30 min and then used immediately in the next step without workup or purification. MS (ES+): m/e 498.1 [M+H]+.
