The above ester (0.4 g, 1.1 mmol) was dissolved in ethanol (10 ml) and 4N sodium hydroxide (1 ml) was added. The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 h and excess concentrated hydrochloric acid was added followed by dichloromethane (400 ml). The suspension was dried (MgSO4) and the solvent evaporated in vacuo. The residue was re-evaporated with acetone, dissolved in acetone (10 ml) and left for crystallisation. This afforded 0.17 g of the title compound as a solid.
