To a mixture of 8-nitro-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-1-benzazepin-2-one (1.000 g, 4.850 mmol) and cesium carbonate (3.160 g, 9.699 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (20 mL) was added, 1-bromo-2-methoxyethane (0.9 mL, 9.7 mol). The reaction was heated to at 50° C. O/N. The reaction mixture was filtered and the filtrate evaporated to afford a residue that was extracted into DCM and washed with water, brine and dried by passing through a funnel filled with MgSO4. The filtrate was evaporated and the residue purified by chromatography (silica gel eluted with 3:1 EtOAc:hexane) to provide 1-(2-methoxy-ethyl)-8-nitro-1,3,4,5-tetrahydro-benzo[b]azepin-2-one (1.004 g, 78%) as pale yellow crystals that had the following properties: 1H-NMR (CDCl3, 400 MHz) δ 8.33 (s, 1H), 8.05 (d, J=8.3, 1H), 7.38 (d, J=8.3, 1H), 4.05 (br s, 2H), 3.62 (m, 2H), 3.32 (s, 3H). 2.86 (br s, 2H), 2.35 2.10 (m, 4H).
