Procedure
To a solution containing chloral (4 g, 27 mmol) and sodium sulfate (35 g, 244 mmol) in 20 mL of water was added a solution containing 2,3-dichloroaniline (4.47 g, 27.6 mmol) and 3.5 mL of concentrated HCl in 5 mL of water. To this mixture was added 6.0 g (87 mmol) of hydroxylamine hydrochloride in 10 mL of water. The reaction mixture was refluxed in a 100° C. oil bath for 10 minutes. The reaction was cooled to room temperature and 5.7 g of N-(2,3-dichloro-phenyl)-2-[(E)-hydroxyimino]-acetamide was isolated by filtration as a yellow solid (90%): MS (m/e): 233.1 (M+1).
